Tunneling is the technique of creating a passage into the vehicle by entering through an exterior area that can be opened or accessed without relying on the main doors being operable. The rear trunk area is the area used for this approach because it provides a relatively straightforward, direct route from outside the vehicle into the cabin. By gaining access through the trunk, rescuers can remove interior panels and extend a tunnel into the back seat and passenger space, reaching the occupant with less disturbance and risk than forcing a door in a crushed or blocked vehicle. This is especially useful when doors are jammed or the intrusion makes direct door entry impractical.
